Kicks Leisure George Dobbins League Cup First Round

Giant-killing is alive and well.

But while there were a few surprises in the first round of the Kicks Leisure George Dobbins League Cup, the majority of top flight sides displayed a gulf in class over their lower Division opponents.

However, the heavy defeats doled out by a number of the top clubs makes the achievements of Blyth Isabella, Red House Farm, Seaton Burn and North Shields Athletic in producing shocks all the more satisfying.

Isabella striker Kris Allington produced the performance of the day in bagging a hat-trick that sent Premier Division Wallsend Town crashing out.

Andrew Haigh struck twice and although Lee Garwood netted a double and Steve Matthews grabbed another for Town, it wasn’t enough to spare their blushes.

Harraby United were also left red-faced after going out at Red House Farm, with a Mike Swift own goal adding insult to injury as it proved the winner after Aaron Roberts had cancelled out Steve Clark’s early opener for the Division One side.

John Wyres hit two in North Shields Athletic’s surprise 5-4 extra time victory at Gateshead Redheugh. Anthony Keith, Karl Morrison and Scott Jasper got the others for the jubilant Division Two side with Ben Howell, Graeme King (2) and Kev Hay replied and it also took extra time for Seaton Burn to send Newcastle Uni tumbling out of the competition.

Although Max Ocollins and Enaka Emordi were on target for the Students, Burn celebrated with strikes from Barker, Chris Baker and an Andrew Bennett winner.

Michael Fenwick crashed in five as holders Seaton Delaval ruthlessly dispatched New Fordley.

Daniel Maguire (2), Craig Johnson, Sam Robinson and Mason Stephenson got the others as the holders began their defence of the silverware with a romp. Craig Dunn got the consolation.

Carlisle City banged in eight against Longbenton, with Sean Bannon claiming four. Tom Lucock added two more with Dan Bulman and David Seggie completing the rout - Anthony Peel scored a consolation for the Bulls.

Amble United romped into round two as they hit eight at Wideopen.

Alistair Turvey, Josh Hay and Brent Aisbitt all struck doubles with Ryan Douglas and Sean Taylor also on the scoresheet. Andrew Shaw pulling one back.

Birtley St. Joseph’s striker Damien Stevens grabbed a hat-trick in a 7-0 drubbing of Swalwell with James Bowman, Phil Quigley, Tony Smith and Martin Guy getting the others.

Hexham’s Mark Gibson (2), Scott Robson, Michael Robson, Stuart Brown and Matthew MacLoughlin fired in as they proved too much for Grainger Park, who scored through Shaun Sager and Adam Hall while High Howdon’s Craig Black was another hat-trick hero in a 5-0 drubbing of Alston. Alex Nesbitt got the other two.

Ian Lee struck two for Cullercoats as they inflicted a first defeat on Cramlington Town. Daniel Sneap and Dean McCarthy got the others, Jordan Watson replying, while Ashington Colliers went through thanks to first half goals by Ian Nickalls and David Brown at Newcastle Benfield Reserves.

John Amos crashed in atreble for Killingworth as they needed extra time to see off the strong challenge of Bohemians, who had Dan Betney and Matty Atkin on target. Paul Baird got the other for the Premier side, while Blyth Town won the all-Premier affair at Walker Central, despite trailing to Paul Collinson’s early opener. Daniel Long, Damon Mullen and Chris Lyle did the damage after the break.

Dan Sherliker, Matty Smith and Dave Deighton scored for Forest Hall as they disposed of Cramlington United and although Morpeth Town A went ahead through Darren Percy’s header at Percy main, another shock was averted as Graeme Troughton, Dean Morgan and Chris Bell hit back for the Villagers.

Premier Division

Heaton Stannington crashed to their first defeat of the season despite a late fightback that left visitors Stocksfield hanging on.

The Griffins left the reigning champions stunned as they romped into a three-nil lead with goals from Chris Hall and Tom Finnerty (2).

The black and whites hit back and goals from Craig Schofield and Michael Waggett made sure it was a nervy finish for the Tyne Valley side.

Hebburn Reyrolle held visitors Whitley Bay A until the 52^nd minute when Lewis Burns netted and the Seahorses went on to add three more late on through Andrew Robertson (2) and Sean Jobson.

Shankhouse went ahead against Rutherford through Reece Farndell and although Peter Williams levelled, luck wasn’t on the basement team’s side as they conceded an own goal and then missed a penalty at the other end.

Lee Gustard added a third in the 87^th minute to kill them off.

Division One

Mark Worral struck twice as Northbank went top of Division One.

Cameron Wilson and John Slaven also netted for the Cumbrians with visitors Willington Quay Saints scoring through Kane Chirnside and Mark Henderson.

Bedlington Terriers Reserves are the form team in the Division and a Dylan Williamson double got them off to a great start at Ponteland United.

Paul Ford pulled one back but Scott Westaway made it 3-1. Billy Holden added a second for struggling Pont.

Jordan Nellis thundered in a hat-trick and he was joined on the scoresheet by Josh Gilmartin, who tucked away a penalty, John Paxton and Jake Walton as the Greens were in seventh heaven against Newcastle Chemfica.

Division Two

Wallsend Boys Club were made to work hard for the narrow 1-0 win at Alnwick Town Reserves that takes them back to the top of Division Two, with Dan Parker the goal hero.
